How do you sell yourself?

Do you find yourself applying for roles, hour after hour with no answer, no acknowledgement email and wonder how to get yourself noticed?

You’re not alone, there are ways to set yourself apart from the rest however sometimes candidates try too hard, for example an 8 page CV with every single job, skill and hobby will NOT make a recruiter think you can do everything and anything, remember; it’s supposed to be a summary.

So how can you sell yourself?

  1. Make a good first impression; make your CV clear and uniform. Always use the same font and colour with clear headings such as ‘employment history’ and ‘core skills’, also when describing your previous roles always use bullet points.
  2. Write a good profile; it’s extremely important that your personal statement is tailored to the situation and role. In 50 to 150 words you need to tell the hiring manager – why you want this role, why this industry, what skills make you the best for the role, and what your career aspirations are.
  3. Understandably if you’re a school leaver you may be stuck when it comes to accomplishments from previous roles. Instead of attempting to relate your first part time job to your new career, we recommend that you put emphasis on the skills you’ve developed throughout your education and school life and your enthusiasm for the role you’re applying for.
  4. List your core skills and make sure you have a good mix of interpersonal and technical, e.g. communication and excellent telephone manner as well as any systems/ databases and MS office. Write your transferable skills so they hiring manager knows these can be used in a different setting.
  5. Keep you CV updated, if you’ve completed temporary work or finished a course always add it and reread your CV every now and then to see if you can improve it, a fresh look makes all the difference.

Asking friends, family and Recruiters to look over your CV can help also, take their advice on board and they might even be able to think of skills and experience that you hadn’t even considered.
