CV Writing Tips
- Do not make your CV too long. Try to stick to 2 sides of A4 if possible
- There is no need to put personal information such as your date of birth or marital status on your CV. There is also no need for a photo
- Always write your CV in chronological order with your most recent position first
- Avoid being too wordy – your key responsibilities should be bulleted clearly and concisely
- Try to write your CV in the third person. Avoid using ‘I’
- Make sure the information you provide is relevant to the role you are applying for
- Make sure that there are no spelling or grammatical errors – ask people to proof-read for you
- Do not have unexplained gaps in your work history. Explain any gaps that you may have clearly and concisely
- Never lie on your CV - it must be a true account of your skills and experience. You could be caught out if you choose to over embellish
- Make your CV positive and do not focus on any negatives. Employers want to know what you can do, rather than what you can’t do
- Try and make your CV sound enthusiastic and confident and keep it interesting
- Outline your key skills close to the top of your CV so they can be seen at a glance
- Use the past tense for your previous jobs and present tense for your current one
- Include any skills which may be useful in a business environment, such as linguistic skills
