Interview Tips


  1. Research the job and the company that you are interviewing for
  2. Think about the skills and experience you have that match the job description
  3. Think about what questions may be asked and how you will answer them
  4. Prepare some questions that you want to ask them
  5. Plan your journey to ensure you arrive with time to spare
  6. Memorise the names and the job titles of the people you will be meeting

The interview

  1. Dress to impress
  2. Turn off your mobile phone!
  3. Give a firm handshake (not hand breaking!) and give direct eye contact
  4. Use the interviewers name, but avoid over familiarity
  5. Do not chew gum, and if you smoke, try not to have a cigarette directly before the interview
  6. Do not ramble. Answer the questions with more than a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but avoid going over 1 minute for your answer.
  7. Do not complain about your current or previous employers. Be positive about your work experience and focus on what you have learnt and achieved there.
  8. Don’t ask questions about the salary on the first interview
  9. If you do not understand a question, ask for clarification. Don’t try and answer something you do not understand.
  10. Be truthful, but enthusiastic
  11. If you are interested in the position, tell them. Ask what the next stage of the interview process will be.
  12. Always follow up a negative answer (i.e. your greatest weakness) with a positive
  13. Sit forward on the chair with your body leaning towards the interviewer showing you are interested in the position. Keep your hands in control on your lap. Keep eye contact, but don’t stare.
  14. Perhaps most importantly – smile!
